Oh wow! Excited for you as you go through the big update! Good luck!! [K]

P.S. Someday, when we grow up, we'll also make a change. But until that day arrives... I'm still on WP. Sigh...

I'm new to you blog. But I really think you have the start of a good concept UI-wise. Normally I don't like "clickable images". And I'm highly impressed with you choosing *not* to use Flash! The UI does not feel heavy or slow at all!

But on the other side of the dime. I would like to see static URL:s, for example http://bronmarshall.com/?page_id=1377 does not give me confidence the desert recipies will stay there. On the other hand you might not like linking directly to it? For SEO it also sometimes makes sense to put stuff in the URL...

A searchable index would be nice. And how are you going to solve timelines? The magazine layout is stunning, but manually searching in it is not so easy.

And last, what technology are you using if you tossed WP out the door? You have some kind of a GUI for making the magazine covers? Just curious...

I would have some small (really tiny compared had you been using Flash) nitpicking about the HTML. But that is just details...

I really think your new design technically is a very good example of why many sites use Flash where they really should not.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments!

Hi Bakpappa,
Thank you so much for your comments here and for those left in my Easter issue.
In answer to some of your questions...

The static URLs problem is actually one of the very reasons I'm ditching wordpress, by default when I first started blogging with WP it created the numbered pages. I've never been happy with that and when I tried to change over to static text WP mucked up various other considerations, SE cache having both text and numbers and therefore marking us down, incoming links, cropping etc. Newer versions of WP probably have corrected some of this, I'm not sure.

The new magazine design recipes/articles do have static URLs - and only "A Look Back" contains references and links to my previous WP blogging with the numbered URLs.
However we are working on integrating all of my previous WP content into the new design.

At this time I'd prefer not to announce all of my plans for the UI - rather invite you back to discover them as we progress.
I can tell you this very first Easter Issue is just a "drop in the bucket" of my plans, searching, timelines and indexes have all been taken in to consideration.

As for what "technology" - I am privileged to be married to a very talented computer programmer.
So to cut a long story short together we are creating our own and lastly no, I don't have a special GUI, (graphic user interface).

Thanks again so much for your constructive feedback, it's very much appreciated.

The front page was really slow to load for me today - and I'm in New Zealand. Server issues maybe? Seeing as bakpappa had no problems with speed.

  • Hi Bronwyn, my server is actually located in the US and I don't believe there were any problems. However Telecom here did have issues on Thursday, so maybe that was related? Either way I'm sorry you had problems

Wow goodluck on your site re-design. I love the whitebackground. =) I wish i'm married too to a talented computer programmer. LOL
